Neglecta - Omeo Gum: Small tree 21', tolerates shade, drought, cold, damp weather. Thick green, rounded leaves may take on a purplish hue during winter. Bark is rough on trunk, fibrous, elongated strips, smooth above.  Zone 7
  Newbeyi-  Newby's mallet, Beaufort Inlet mallet: 16-24', 16" rainfall, loam, clay. In cultivation often forms an erect tree with short trunk and dense crown. Unique, horn-like bud caps with large, greenish-yellow flowers. Makes a nice street tree, suitable as a windbreak. West Australia.  Zone 9.
Nicholii - Nichol's Willow Leaf Peppermint, Narrow leaf black peppermint: Tree to 50' with slender, peppermint scented foliage. 28" minimum rainfall per year. Does well in clay soils and we have reports of this one being a nice container tree for household use. New South Wales.  Will take some frost. Zone 9.

Niphophila (pauciflora ssp niphophila) - Snow Gum, Narrow-leaved apple: A small mallee to 20' with white flowers and white, peeling bark. Provide excellent drainage! New South Wales, Victoria.  Zone 8.  Reported hardy to 0 degrees F, but good drainage is essential.
Nitens - Shining Gum: Smooth to rough, flaky, dark gray to black, shedding bark. Found in Mountain elevations of 900-1600m, snow.  No lignotuber.  Reported to tolerate down to +10 F. Large tree to 230', fragrant, sweet-scented foliage - reminds me of Wriggley's Juicyfruit Gum! Attractive foliage, silvery, square stems. New South Wales, Victoria, Tasmania.  Zone 8    Annual rainfall 30".
Nitida - Smithton Peppermint: Large tree to 130' with white flowers. Fibrous, gray bark up to 3/4, then smooth yellow green. Quick growth in sandy soils.  Tasmania.  Zone 8. 
  Notabilis - Blue Mountains Mahogany: 90' tree with discolorous dark green leaves and white flowers. New South Wales, Queensland.  Zone 8.  
Nova anglica - New England Peppermint, Black Peppermint: Tree 45' with rough, fibrous, gray bark on lower, smooth above, light brown. White flowers. Reported to be very hardy and recover from cold damage at -12 F.  New South Wales.  Zone 8.   
Nutans - Now Cernua: Red-flowered moort: A small, bushy shrub or tree 6-8' and equally wide. Dark red flowers with creamy anthers. 11-22" rainfall per year. West Australia.  Zone 9.

Obliqua - Messmate Stringybark, Messmate: Large tree to 275' with white flowers. Excellent timber tree, straight grained. South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales, Queensland.  Zone 8.  20-96 inches annual rainfall.
  Oblonga - Narrow-leaved stringybark: 49' tree with white flowers, New South Wales.  Zone 8.
  Obtusiflora - Dongarra mallee: A mallee from West Australia to about 12' tall.  The bark tends to be rough in texture, shedding along the lower trunk then smooth above with colors of gray, salmon pink to brown.  Juvenile stems tend to be square in shape with gray-green or glaucous leaves.  The flowers are white and appear in groups of seven to nine.  West Australia.  Zone 9.  Annual rainfall about 24 inches per year.
  Occidentalis - Flat-Topped Yate: Tree 36-60', fibrous, flaky gray bark on lower trunk, smooth white or cream bark above. Attractive yellow flowers on long buds. Favors alluvial flats subject to flooding. Easily grown, drought resistant, frost resistant. Frequently cultivated in Australia and overseas. Suitable for extreme saline sites.  West Australia.  Zone 9. 
  Oleosa - Red sorrell: 9-36' mallee type with white flowers. Hardy, drought and frost resistant tree suited to most soils in low to moderate rainfall areas. WA, SA, Vic, NSW. Zone 8.
  Olsenii Woila Gum. Small tree to 36' from higher elevations of New South Wales.  White flowers, Zone 8.
  Oraria - Ooragmandee: 6-18 x 4-15' mallee. 16" annual rainfall, sandy loam. Cliff Head West Australia.  Zone 9.
Orbifolia - Round-Leaved Mallee: A small mallee to 15' with rounded, green leaves and yellow flowers. Smooth, reddish bark peeling in curling strips (minniritchi). Rainfall about 10" per year. West Australia.  Zone 9.  
  Oreades - Blue Mountain Ash: Large tree to 90' with White flowers. White or yellow peeling bark in long ribbons. Frost resistant. New South Wales, Queensland.  Zone 8.  Annual rainfall 30".
Ovata - Swamp Gum: Tree to 60', bark is rough on lower trunk, shedding, gray, white or pinkish gray above. White flowers. Suitable for waterlogged sites or slightly saline areas in sand or clay and other areas with high rainfall. NSW, Vic, SA, Tas.  Zone 8.  Annual rainfall 24".
  Oxymitra Sharp-capped mallee: From central Australia, a small mallee to 16', low moisture requirement.  Zone 8.

  Pachyloma  Kalgan Plains Mallee: A small mallee to 16' from West Australia featuring glossy green leaves and white flowers.  Low moisture requirement, Zone 9.
  Pachyphylla - Red-bud or Thick-leaved mallee: A beautiful small mallee with colorful buds and pale yellow flowers. Extremely drought resistant species from WA, SA, NT. Zone 8.  
Paliformis - Wadbilliga Ash: Small tree to 40' with white flowers and smooth bark, shedding in strips. New South Wales.  Zone 8.
Parvula (parvifolia) - Small-leaved gum: A rare species found only in a small area of New South Wales. It features smooth bark in various colors and white flowers. Mature size 30'. Rated hardy to +5 degrees, has recovered from minus 12.  Zone 8. (We have this one planted in our landscape and it has survived the last two winters in Zone 6 with only minimum damage so far.  With the "Global warming trend", perhaps this one will make it through our winters.)
  Patens Blackbutt: Tall tree to 120' from West Australia.  Best features is it's ability to tolerate temporary flooding conditions.  Zone 9.
Pauciflora - Snow gum, White sally, Cabbage gum: Tree or mallee to 90'. Smooth, white to grayish white bark, shedding in ribbons. White flowers. Qld, NSW, Vic, Tas.  Zone 8. Good drainage essential. 
  Pellita - Large fruited red mahogany.  Fast growing tree to 90' from New South Wales, Queensland.  Zone 8.  Annual rainfall 36".
  Pendens - Badgingarra weeping mallee: 6-16' x 4-15', 24" annual rainfall, sandy gravel, white flowers, weeping mallee habit. WA.  Zone 9.
  Peninsularis - Cummins mallee: A small mallee species to 6m (18') found on the southern Eyre Peninsula, South Australia, Yeelanna, Cummins and Koppio area.  It features smooth bark and the adult leaves are glossy green.  The bark colors range from gray, brown, copper and orange and hang in ribbons in the upper branches.  The flowers are pale yellow to white.  Unusual, urn-shaped fruits in clusters are unique and attractive.  Zone 8.
Perriniana - Spinning gum: Known as spinning gum as the leaves detach and spin around the stem. Smooth, coppery trunk. Small tree 15-30' with white flowers. Good cooler climate ornamental.  Victoria & Tasmania.  Zone 8.  Annual rainfall about 25 inches per year.
  Phaenophylla ssp phaenophylla: Small mallee from West Australia to 15'.  Suitable for honey or hedges.  Attractive yellow flowers and glossy green leaves.  West Australia.  Zone 9.  Annual rainfall 14 inches per year.
Phenax ssp compressa: Kangaroo Island Mallee: (Previously known as Eucalyptus anceps) Small tree to 20' - golden buds produced in winter are popular with florists - white  flowers in summer - tolerant of drought and lime.  Suitable for moderate saline sites.  West Australia, South Australia, Victoria.  Zone 9.
  Phoenicea - Fiery Gum, Scarlet Gum: Outstanding selection for orange flowers and flaky bark. Mature size 38'. Queensland, Northern Territory, West Australia.  Zone 9. 
  Pileata - Capped mallee: 9-18' x 12-24' mallee type, sandy loam, clay loam. West Australia, South Australia.  Zone 9.  10 inches annual rainfall.
  Pilularis - Blackbutt:  Tall tree to 210', timber production, white flowers.  New South Wales, Queensland.  Zone 8.  Annual rainfall 36".
  Pimpiniana - Pimpin mallee: An attractive low shrub/mallee with grayish leaves, pendulous buds and fruits. Small, to 6', yellow flowers. WA. Zone 9. Annual rainfall 24 inches.
  Piperita ssp urceolaris (E. Urceolaris)- Sydney Peppermint: Tree to 65' with white flowers, leaves have strong peppermint scent when crushed. 36-80" rainfall per year. NSW. Zone 8.    
  Platycorys - Boorabin mallee: 9-18' x 12-18', sand, clay loam. West Australia.  Zone 9.  Annual rainfall 10 inches.
  Platypus ssp congregata - Moort: A small mallet or marlock to 8m (24'). The bark is smooth, colors range from coppery brown, pinkish gray, black to gray green.  Adult leaves are very thick and glossy green to olive green.  Flowers are pale yellow and quite attractive.  This species is found in West Australia along coastal to sub-coastal areas from Gnowangerup and Tambellup north of Albany, the Salmon gums area and Speddingup.  It is often found in pure stands in heavy soils.  Zone 9.
Platypus var platypus - Moort: Greenish yellow to citrus yellow flowers on a 32' tree, very showy. clay soil. Suitable for moderate saline sites.  West Australia.  Zone 9.  16 inches annual rainfall.
  Pleurocarpa - Tallerack: A mallee from West Australia to about 15' tall with many long, erect stems.  The bark tends to be smooth with colors of gray to gray-brown.  Juvenile stems tend to be  smooth and square in shape with thick glaucous leaves.  The flowers are white and appear in groups of three.  Zone 9.  Annual rainfall 24 inches.
  Pluricaulis subsp porphyrea - Purple-leaved mallee. Small shrub 9' with attractive purple/blue foliage in the crown, pale to lemon yellow flowers.  West Australia.  Zone 9.  16 inches annual rainfall.
Polyanthemos - Red Box: Fibrous bark, gray brown, smooth gray, pink or cream above. Foliage often used as fresh cut filler due to its round leaf type. Tree 20-60' with cream flowers. New South Wales.  Zone 8. Annual rainfall 20 inches.
Polybractea - Blue-leaved mallee: 6-18', excellent species for oil production. Dull, blue-green glaucous new leaves, white flowers. Suitable for moderate saline sites.  Victoria, New South Wales.   Zone 9. 
Populnea - Poplar box, Bimbil box: Brownish-gray bark, low branching with a large crown, 32-65'. Shining green leaves, hard, durable wood, white flowers. Suitable for Koala browse and shade.  Queensland, New South Wales.  Zone 9. 
Preissiana - Bell-fruited mallee: Small mallee 6-9' with yellow flowers, smooth bark, gray over pink. West Australia.  Zone 9.  Annual rainfall 16 inches.
  Preissiana x staeri  Cross between E. preissiana and E. staeri.  Yellow flowers, West Australia.  Zone 9.
Propinqua - Small-fruited gray gum. Annual rainfall 32" per year. The bark changes color as it ages and is quite attractive, flowers are white. New South Wales, Queensland.  Zone 9.   Annual rainfall 34 inches.
  Pterocarpa - 21-33' tall mallet, white flowers.  West Australia.  Zone 9.  Annual rainfall 10 inches.
  Pulchella - White peppermint, Narrow-leaved peppermint: Medium tree to 68' with smooth yellow/gray/white bark. Peppermint scented leaves when crushed, popular street tree. Tasmania. Zone 8.    
Pulverulenta - Silver-leaved mountain gum: Small species 10-30' with smooth bark, shedding in ribbons, white flowers. Nice ornamental species - similar to E. cinerea but more cold hardy.  New South Wales.  Zone 8. Annual rainfall 32".
  Pumila Pokolbin Mallee: Mallee to 5 m tall, forming a lignotuber.  The bark is smooth, grey to pink, yellow-green, brown, cream or white, shedding from stems in ribbons. Adult leaves lanceolate, slightly glossy or dull green to blue green, flowers white. New South Wales.  Zone 8.
Punctata - Grey gum: Large tree to 100' with mottled, gray shedding bark, white flowers. New South Wales.  Zone 9. Annual rainfall 28".
  Pyriformis - Dowerin Rose, Pear-fruited mallee: A small species to 16' that features spectacular flowers. The flowers are bright red or pink with yellow anthers. Smooth, gray or salmon pink bark, ribbons at base, does not like wet feet! West Australia.  Zone 9.  Annual rainfall 14 inches.

Quadrangulata - White-topped box: A tall tree to 150' that branches down to the ground. New branch stems are square, fast growing. New South Wales, Queensland.  Zone 8.
